Eagles advance to UMAC tournament finale with 2-1 win over Northland

ST. PAUL (Nov. 4, 2008) – Northwestern College advanced to the championship game of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference postseason tournament on Tuesday, as the Eagles defeated Northland College 2-1. NWC will now play the league's regular season champion, College of St. Scholatistica, at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8.

Rebekah Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) scored Northwestern's first goal of the game in the 38th minute. Kirby's successful shot came after teammate Kyrie Jorgenson (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah)'s (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) shot rebounded off of goalkeeper Brittany Ballwanz.

After a 1-0 halftime lead, the Eagles' Amy Green (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) added to her team's goal total at the 72:26 mark, taking a pass from Kirby to make the score 2-0 in NWC's favor.

Green's goal turned out to be the game-winner for Northwestern, as Sarah Strobino scored her 57th career goal for Northland with just over six minutes remaining in the game. Strobino, a junior, became Northland's all-time leading scorer with the goal. Mariah Cook assisted on Northland's only goal of the game.

Northwestern will travel to Duluth, Minn. with a 14-7-0 overall record (12-2-0 UMAC).
