Two matches, two wins for Volleyball

NWC-Crown Box Score
NWC-North Central Box Score

ST. PAUL (Oct. 14, 2008) – Playing two matches in one day wasn't a problem for the Northwestern volleyball team, as they swept Crown College and North Central University in a triangular setting. NWC first downed the Storm 3-0 in a UMAC affair before taking care of business in quick fashion versus the Rams, 3-0.

In the match against Crown, Northwestern was led offensively by Kathryne Engel (Wayzata, Minn./West Lutheran) (Wayzata, Minn./West Lutheran) and Steph Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing), who had 12 and 10 kills, respectively, as Northwestern posted a .407 attacking percentage. The Eagles 44 kills in the match dwarfed Crown's 17, as the Storm struggled at a .043 rate.

Hillary Slagter (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) and Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) combined for 31 assists in the match, while Koth was the match's digs leader with 16.

Eagles Head Coach Beth Wilmeth played three different lineups in a 25-4, 25-17, 25-12 match versus North Central, with most of her starting lineup only seeing the court in the initial set. Everyone in a Northwestern uniform played for the second of the team's last three matches. Some even played a different position than they're used to, as showcased by Danielle Rhodes (Iowa City, Iowa/City) (Iowa City, Iowa/City). Rhodes, who is NWC's starting libero, recorded five kills as she played in the front row for the first time in 2008.

Koth led all players with 10 kills in the match, while three others had five or more kills. Northwestern's kill total of 42 more than tripled their opponents, who tallied 13. The junior also had 15 digs, while Kelsey Korporal (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredricksburg) had double-digit digs for the second straight match with 10. Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) (Cloquet, Minn./Carleton) had four blocks in the contest.

Both matches were good for the Eagles from the serving stripe, where NWC recorded a total of 19 aces on the day.

At the day's end, Northwestern improved their record to 16-4 overall and 7-0 in UMAC play. The Eagles have won their last nine matches, seven of which have come in the Ericksen Center. One more win at home will tie a school record from 2001 when the team won eight matches on their own court. NWC has two home matches left, as they'll host the College of St. Scholastica and Northland College on Oct. 23-24. Bethany Lutheran College and Martin Luther College, the league's current No. 2 and 3 teams, are Northwestern's first priority though, as they'll hit the road this weekend. The Eagles will face Bethany Lutheran in Mankato, Minn. this coming Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling to New Ulm, Minn. for a 1 p.m. match against Martin Luther on Saturday.
