Dr. Jeffrey Payne, M.D.

    Team Physician
Dr. Jeffrey Payne, M.D. serves as a Team Physician for University of Northwestern Athletics as part of a partnership between UNW and Mayo Clinic Orthopedics and Sports Medicine that began in 2024. He holds certifications from the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine), the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (registered in Musculoskeletal Sonography) and Mayo Clinic Quality Academy (Bronze level).

Dr. Payne received his undergraduate degree from Creighton University in Omaha, NE. While in school, Dr. Payne received the university's Superior Scholastic Achievement Award in 1997 and 1998, as well as its College of Arts and Sciences Award in 1999. He stayed in Omaha to attend medical school at Creighton University School of Medicine.

Dr. Payne spent his residency internship at University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria in Peoria, IL before completing his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He remained at Mayo for his Fellowship in Sports Medicine.

Dr. Payne is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American College of Sports Medicine and American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. In addition to his role as Team Physician with UNW Athletics, Dr. Payne also has served as a Team Physician for the USA Basketball Junior National Team since 2019 and is also the Head Team Physician for North Central University.

In addition to the awards from Creighton, Dr. Payne has also received the following honors: Earl Elkins Mayo Resident Award (Awarded to the most outstanding senior Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation resident) (2007), G. Keith Stillwell Memorial Award for Outstanding Resident Research (2007), Mayo Health System Silver Award (2009), Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine Top Doctor Rising Star (2017) and Mayo Clinic PM&R Excellence in Quality Award (2018).

Outside of work, Dr. Payne enjoys spending time with his family and coaching his kids' athletic teams. He also enjoys strength training, running and exercising in general.
