The 2024-25 athletics season will mark Matt Gustafson's 10th as an Assistant Coach for the University of Northwestern's Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track & Field teams.
With the track program, he primarily serves as the middle distance and distance coach. In his eight seasons with the Eagles, there have been 11 middle distance/distance Track & Field school records broken under his watch across the men's and women's programs.
Prior to his tenure at UNW, Coach Gustafson coached track and field and wrestling at the middle school/high school level. He was also a volunteer basketball coach for Ridgewater College in Willmar, MN for five seasons.
A former Eagle himself, Gustafson's sprint medley relay team he ran on in the 1997-98 season still holds the indoor school record with a time of 3:59.85.
In 2001, Coach Gustafson earned a bachelor's degree in Sport Management from Liberty University. He later obtained a Master of Education in School Counseling degree from Lynchburg College (now University of Lynchburg) in 2006.
Gustafson is in his 19th year as a Minnesota State System College Counselor - most recently at Hennepin Techincal College in Brooklyn Park.
Coach Gustafson and his wife, Erica, currently reside in Shoreview.
