ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Women's Soccer team returned home to take on the Minnesota Morris Cougars. The Eagles jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first 45 minutes, and continued to dominate possession to finish with a score of 5-0.
In the 9th minute,
Mercy Erickson (Lewiston, Minn./Homeschool) delivered her signature flip throw, placing the ball in the box for the head of
Ada Meehan (Waconia, Minn./Homeschool). Meehan's header set up
Britta Holter (Hudson, Wis./Hudson), who collected the ball and sent it to the back of the net. Eight minutes later, Meehan called her own number, crossing a defender and burying the ball in the left corner.
In the 33rd minute,
Marie Kendall (Dakar, Senegal/Dakar Academy) added her name in the goals column with a rocket of a shot from the top of the box, to go up three. Kendall added another goal with 40 seconds remaining in the opening half. The Meehan sisters teamed up to create the chance, as
Ada Meehan (Waconia, Minn./Homeschool) played a great pass to Naomi, who fired a shot off the post. Kendall pounced on the rebound and buried the ball to give the Eagles the 4-0 lead.
Northwestern remained on the gas pedal and scored its fifth goal of the game just 90 seconds into the second half.
Naomi Meehan (Waconia, Minn./Homeschool) passed to
Ada Meehan (Waconia, Minn./Homeschool), who settled the pass before striking the ball into the back of the net.
The Eagles' defense secured the shutout, while not allowing Morris a single shot attempt through the 90 minutes.
Sam Hansen (Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) held down the Northwestern goal for the opening 80 minutes before
Ella Rydberg (Plymouth, Minn./Heritage Christian Academy) relieved her for the final 10 minutes. Kendall and
Ada Meehan (Waconia, Minn./Homeschool) each tallied two goals. Kendall finishing with 12 shots and six shots on target while Meehan notched four shots landing two on goal to go along with an assist. Holter also secured a goal in three on-target attempts, and
Naomi Meehan (Waconia, Minn./Homeschool) finished with an assist and two shots on target.
With the win, Northwestern is now 5-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in conference. They will play again at Reynolds Field on Saturday, October 3, at 2:00 PM, taking on the Crown College Polars.
