SUPERIOR, Wis. - The University of Northwestern Women's Soccer team went toe-to-toe in a rock fight of a match on Tuesday night, battling Wisconsin-Superior to a 1-1 draw on the road. This result was massive for the Eagles, marking their first time leaving Superior with conference points since 2021.
Last weekend, against Bethany Lutheran, the UNW attack found chance after chance, but could not convert any of them into a goal. Despite the shutout last week, the Eagles opened the scoring in their game Tuesday night, delivering the first goal of the game in the 24th minute. Marie Kendall (Dakar, Senegal/Dakar Academy) unleashed a long-range shot from outside the 18. The UW-Superior keeper managed to tip it off the crossbar, but Briella Babcock (Byron, Minn./Byron) was first to the rebound, burying it into the net for a 1-0 lead. The Yellowjackets responded in the 35th minute to level the score heading into halftime.
The second half turned into a midfield battle, with both sides struggling to find space in the attacking third. Both teams combined for a total of 8 shots in the final 45 minutes after tallying 20 in the opening half. UNW continued to create offensive attempts as they outshot UWS 15-13 and posted 11 shots on target compared to the Yellowjackets' 5.
Babcock paced the attack with three shots and the lone Eagle goal. Kendall recorded the assist and went a perfect 6-for-6 on shots on frame, while Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wis./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah) added three more attempts with two on goal. In net, Sam Hansen (Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) anchored the defense with four critical saves while playing all 90 minutes.
Northwestern returns home for its first UMAC home match on Saturday, September 27, at 4:30 PM at Reynolds Field, following the men's game against Martin Luther College.
