ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team faced off against the University of Wisconsin-Stout on Wednesday night, falling 4-0 to the Blue Devils.
Despite the scoreline, the Eagles created chances of their own, tallying 11 total shots in the match. Marie Kendall (Dakar, Senegal/Dakar Academy) and Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wis./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah) carried the offensive load, each breaking through the Stout back line multiple times. Kendall led the way with six shots, while Mersberger added five, including a late look that went just high with 11 minutes remaining.
In goal, Sam Hansen (Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) stayed active throughout the night and finished with 11 saves against the Blue Devils' attack. The Eagles battled for the full 90 minutes but couldn't find the finishing touch against a strong Stout defense that held its ground throughout.
With the result, Northwestern moves to 1-3-1 on the season and now turns its attention to UMAC play. UNW opens its conference schedule on Saturday in Mankato against Bethany Lutheran, with kickoff set for 4:30 PM.
