NEW ULM, Minn. - The University of Northwestern Women's Soccer Team traveled to Martin Luther College on Saturday afternoon. In a game that was all Northwestern, the Eagles were forced to wait until the final 12 minutes to find the back of the net; fortunately, in soccer, one is all it takes. The Eagles left Martin Luther with a 1-0 win, taking all three points back home.
Northwestern completely dominated the match, outshooting the Knights 39-3 with 22 shots on target. Martin Luther's goalkeeper had an incredible performance, stopping 21 of those attempts to keep her team in the game.
The breakthrough finally came from Naomi Meehan (Waconia, Minn./Homeschool), who intercepted a goal kick and played a quick pass to Briella Babcock (Byron, Minn./Byron). Babcock returned the ball to Meehan, who buried her shot into the top shelf with a strike even the on-fire keeper couldn't deny.
Meehan led the way with a goal on two shots on target. Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wis./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah) also registered two shots on goal, while Marie Kendall (Dakar, Senegal/Dakar Academy) peppered the net with 11 shots on target. Babcock and Julia Bradley (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) each added three shots on goal. In the goal, Sam Hansen (Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) grabbed two saves.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 7-1-2 in UMAC play and have secured their spot in the UMAC Postseason Tournament. They return home on Wednesday to face Crown College at 4:30 PM in their final week of regular-season action.
