Carson Mersberger (Kiel, Wis./Elkhart Lake-Glenbeaulah) put on a show of his own at the MLC Fall Invitational. The freshman fired a career-best 71 (-1) to win medalist honors and lead the University of Northwestern Men's Golf team to the team title in the event as well. It was the second consecutive day the Eagles collected a trophy after winning the BLC Invite on Friday as well.
Mersberger's 71 featured birdies on the third, eighth, 11
th and 14
th holes.
Shane Seiffert (Corcoran, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) tied for third with a 73 (+1) that included birdies on six and 16.
Jackson Courteau (Otsego, Minn./Rogers) fired a career-low 78 (+6) from the seventh spot in UNW's lineup to tie for eighth, racking up birdies on holes six, 15 and 16.
Trevor Zenk (Forest Lake, Minn./Legacy Christian Academy) slid into the starting five and tied Courteau with a 78 of his own with birdies on six and 12.
Carter Dilly (Henning, Minn./Henning) and
Noah Frazell (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) both shot 81 (+9) with one birdie apiece to tie for 18
th, while
Dawson Burke (Rogers, Minn./Maple Grove) turned in an 83 (+11) with a birdie on 18 to tie for 21
st place. Northwestern's score of 300 (+12) was 11 shots clear of runner-up Martin Luther and tied for its second-lowest score of the season.
The Eagles are getting hot at the right time, as the next event on the schedule is the UMAC Championships. Play will take place Thursday-Saturday at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Minnesota.
