KANSASVILLE, Wis. - From Kansas at the beginning of the week to Kansasville at the end of the week. This is the journey the University of Northwestern Men's Golf team has taken this week, culminating at the Midwest Region Classic in Eastern Wisconsin. The two-day event features the Midwest's best, as well as some strong teams from other areas of the country as well. You can follow along with live results all weekend
here.
Day One
Day one brought about an extremely consistent effort from the UNW men, as all five Eagles in the field shot sub-80 in the opening round.
Carter Dilly (Henning, Minn./Henning) and
Gordon Skaar (Coleraine, Minn./Homeschool) each made four birdies to shoot matching 75's (+3) and lead the way for UNW.
Carson Mersberger (Kiel, Wis./Elkhart Lake-Glenbeaulah) also made four birdies en route to a career-best 77 (+5).
Shane Seiffert (Corcoran, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) carded a 77 as well, highlighted by a birdie on the par-five 16th.
Noah Frazell (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) birdied holes nine, 10 and 11 to finish with a 79 (+7). With the opening round in the books, Northwestern sits in a tie for 18th place among the 44 teams at +16. Dilly and Skaar are tied for 59th, individually, while Mersberger and Seiffert are in a tie for 96th.
The Eagles will tee off at 8:00 AM Saturday morning in the final round in Wisconsin.
Day Two
Northwestern improved by four strokes on Saturday (+16 to +12), thanks in large part to tremendous performances from a seasoned vet and a young rookie.
Shane Seiffert (Corcoran, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) bounced back from a Friday 77 to shoot an even-par 72 in the final round, with four birdies on the scorecard. Freshman
Carson Mersberger (Kiel, Wis./Elkhart Lake-Glenbeaulah) apparently wanted to emulate his elder and team leader, as he shot the exact same scores on both days of the event, although he only made three birdies. The pair (+5 each for the tournament) tied for 58th place.
Gordon Skaar (Coleraine, Minn./Homeschool) and
Carter Dilly (Henning, Minn./Henning) decided to match for the second consecutive day as well, following up Friday's 75's with Saturday 78's (+6). The pair even birdied the same hole, doing so on the par-five 16th, as they finished +9 across both rounds.
Noah Frazell (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) birdied holes five and six on his way to an 81 (+9) to finish +16 overall. UNW's team score of +28 put the Eagles in a tie for 16th out of 44 teams.
Up Next
Northwestern will be back in Minnesota to partake in the Viking Invite, hosted by Bethany Lutheran College, on Friday, September 27th. Tee times are slated for 11:00 AM in Hutchinson.
