Bentley and Keith Both Homer in Game Two as Softball Splits Doubleheader

Clermont, FL –– The University of Northwestern Eagles softball team (3-5) recorded a split on their second day in Florida. In game one, the Eagles lost to the Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairie Wolfs (11-4) 7-2. In game two, the Eagles beat the Carroll University Pioneers (2-4) 9-1.

Game One

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in game one as Sydney Lane (Altoona, Iowa/Grand View Christian) started the game with a double. She moved to third on Allison Terry's (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) bunt single. After Terry stole second, Jadyn Iverson (West Fargo, N.D./West Fargo) recorded an RBI single to bring home Lane. Terry then stole home to make it 2-0 Eagles.

Emma Heffron (Altoona, Iowa/Grand View Christian) set down the first nine Prairie Wolfs in order before the NWU offense exploded in the third. Four hits, a walk, and an error led to a four-run inning for the Prairie Wolfs. They added two more in the fifth, and one in the sixth to extend the lead to 7-2.

Northwestern had five hits as Grace Bentley (Omaha, Neb./Marian) had two to lead the offense. Emma Heffron (Altoona, Iowa/Grand View Christian) gave up two earned runs in her five innings of work before Jenna Nusbaum (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) pitched the sixth and gave up one unearned run.

Game Two

The Eagles offense started hot in game two, but, in contrast to game one, they kept adding on. Sydney Lane (Altoona, Iowa/Grand View Christian) started off the bottom of the first with a walk and Jadyn Iverson (West Fargo, N.D./West Fargo) brought her home on a two-out single.

Grace Bentley (Omaha, Neb./Marian) led off the bottom of the second with a home run to centerfield to make it 2-0. Mikayla Gee (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall) and Lane both reached with two outs and Allison Terry (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) brought them home with a two-run double to extend the lead to 4-0.

In the third, Bentley recorded a two-out single before Gabrielle Keith (Marble Rock, Iowa/Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock) homered to make it 6-0. The Pioneers got their one run in the top of the fourth on two hits and a walk.

In the bottom of the fourth, Gee led off with a walk before Terry tripled to bring her home. Iverson and Edwards both walked to load the bases. Bentley notched an RBI on a hit by pitch and Iverson came around to score on a passed ball to bring the score to 9-1.

Ireland Strubbe (Chandler, Ariz./Valley Christian) got the start in the circle for the Eagles and she stranded two runners on in the fifth to preserve the run-rule victory. She scattered seven hits over her five innings and shut down the Pioneers' bats.

Terry and Bentley each tallied two hits as the Eagles reached base 15 times in only four innings.
