MANKATO, Minn. – The UNW Women's Soccer team played in their UMAC Semifinal match against Bethany Lutheran College on Wednesday night. Though the Eagles battled, they were unable to overcome the Vikings' quick start. Northwestern fell 1-5.
Bethany Lutheran came out of the gate and scored in the first 5 minutes of the match. Four minutes later they scored twice within that 9
th minute. The Vikings scored once again before the Eagles responded with a goal of their own.
Northwestern's
first goal came from the foot of
Naomi Meehan (Waconia, Minn./Homeschool), the fifth goal of her collegiate career. Meehan's goal was assisted by
Megan Kohrt (Monona, Wis./Homeschool). Kohrt received the ball around midfield and dribbled into space, where she delivered the pass to Meehan. Meehan was one-on-one in the box, and connected perfectly as she bulleted her shot into the far side of the goal.
Besides the scoreboard, the Eagles were tightly matched with the Vikings and even out-shot them in the first half, 9-7. In the second half, the Eagles shot 6 times in comparison to the Vikings' 2 shots. Unfortunately for Northwestern, the Vikings finished their shots at a high percentage in the first half, creating a deficit that the Eagles could not overcome.
Bethany Lutheran scored once more in the second half to finalize the score at 1-5. Meehan led the Eagles with her goal, while Kohrt led with an assist to go along with her 3 shots and 2 shots on target.
Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wis./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah) took 4 shots and landed them all on goal.
Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) and
Meghan Corbett (Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) each also added 3 shots. As the Eagles conclude their 2024 season, they say goodbye to their 5 seniors who have benefited this program in so many impactful ways.
