Eckman Breaks the School Record (Again!) With a 74 as Women's Golf Competes in the Midwest Region Classic

KANSASVILLE, Wis. – The University of Northwestern Women's Golf team competed in the Midwest Region Classic in Kansasville, Wisconsin starting on Friday, September 22nd and ending on Saturday, September 23rd.

Day One

Day one of the two-day Midwest Region Classic has concluded and the University of Northwestern Women's Golf Team is firmly in the mix. The squad shot 332 (+44) as a team on Friday, which puts them in a tie for 11th place.

Freshman phenom Morgan Eckman (Jordan, Minn./Jordan) once again led the way for the Eagles, fresh off qualifying for the NCCAA National Championship earlier in the week. While she took a break from shattering school records for at least one day, Eckman still managed to fire a 78 (+6). That score is good for a tie for 10th place entering the second and final round of play.

Reigning UMAC Player of the Year Mattie Krause (Clear Lake, Iowa/Clear Lake) is next in line for UNW after round one, posting an impressive 82 (+10), which marks her lowest score of the season and puts her in a tie for 37th. Not far behind Krause is Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool), who shot an 85 (+13).

Rounding out the scoring for Northwestern was Kirsten Darling (Coon Rapids, Minn./Legacy Christian Academy), who posted an 87. Kelly Van Den Bussche (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) also participated, shooting a 94 (+22) on day one of competition.

The Midwest Region Classic will conclude on Saturday from Brighton Dale Links after round two has been completed. Stay tuned to unweagles.com for final scores and standings from the event.

Day Two

The University of Northwestern Women's Golf team has got off to a dominant start in conference competition so far this fall, and this past weekend they proved that they are able to compete on a regional stage as well. 33 of the top teams in the Midwest competed in this tournament and the Eagles finished in 15th place overall with a two day total of 666.

Stop us if you've heard this before: Morgan Eckman (Jordan, Minn./Jordan) broke the school record. The freshman has had a picture perfect start to her collegiate career and that continued on Saturday afternoon in the second day of the Classic. Eckman shot a 74 (+2) breaking her own school record by a stroke. She finished with a two day total of 152 which was good enough for a tie for second place overall in a field of nearly 200 golfers.

Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) had a good second day of the tournament, shaving three strokes off of her day one score. The freshman shot an 82 (+10) for a two day total of 167. Mattie Krause (Clear Lake, Iowa/Clear Lake) shot a 92 (+20) and finished with a 174 on the weekend.

Kirsten Darling (Coon Rapids, Minn./Legacy Christian Academy) and Kelly Van Den Bussche (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) were neck in neck down the stretch as Darling shot a 92 (+20) on day two for a 179 and Van Den Bussche shot an 86 (+14) to finish with a 180.
