ST. PAUL, Minn.- After a full day of Eagle athletics at Reynolds Field, the University of Northwestern Women's Soccer team went toe to toe with the Crown College Polars. The Eagles have been successful against the Polars in the past few years, continuing that momentum tonight, clinching their first conference win with a 2-0 victory.
Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wisc./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah) and Megan Kohrt (Monona, Wis./Homeschool) were firing on all cylinders tonight. They proved this connection very early on with a Kohrt to Mersberger goal in the 6th minute. The two seemed to be in the middle of the action all night, making things difficult for the Polars in the midfield. It seemed every time the ball was moving up the field, Kohrt had a touch and was looking to push it up to Mersberger for a scoring opportunity.
In what was arguably the best play of the night, Kohrt sent a perfect ball into Mersberger off of a set piece that was followed by a beautiful header to give the Eagles a comfortable lead over the Polars to start the second half strong. In her post-game interview, Mersberger mentioned that she had been working hard on her headers in practice, and was pumped that her work had paid off.
A bright spot for the Polars was their goalkeeper Rachel Fuller. The Eagles definitely did not come by their two goals easily, with Fuller securing 13 saves. On top of this stat line are the smart defensive plays she made throughout the game, keeping her club in the game.
The Eagles freshman goalkeeper Samantha Hansen (Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) also played very well in net, clinching her first career shutout. Her 6 saves combined with a great defensive effort secured the win for UNW.
The Eagles hope to build a win streak as they head to Superior, Wisconsin for a Conference Championship Game rematch on Tuesday, September 19th.
