Men’s Lacrosse Drops Conference Battle with Lumberjacks

ASHLAND, Wis. – The University of Northwestern men's lacrosse team took on the Northland Lumberjacks for an MLC showdown in Wisconsin on Tuesday. A fourth quarter Lumberjack rally felled the Eagles 8-6.

UNW jumped ahead 2-0 with unassisted goals by Thomas Alderson (Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead) and Sam Moses (Wasau, Wis./Wasau East) in the first quarter. The Lumberjacks cut the Eagle lead in half with a goal of their own in the closing minutes of the opening quarter.

Northland tied the game 2-2 with a second quarter goal, though UNW answered with two more. Isaac Geurink (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) assisted Lucas Peters (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) with the go-ahead goal, after which Bryce Schmidgall (Hancock, Minn./Hancock) scored another Eagle goal with an assist from Joseph Will (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake).

Sam Moses (Wasau, Wis./Wasau East) scored a fifth goal for UNW before halftime, though it was preceded and followed by a pair of Lumberjack goals.

At the half, Northwestern led Northland 5-4. In the third, UNW doubled their lead as Khoa Vu (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) found Will who scored his second goal of the day.

Northwestern's 6-4 lead would not hold, as the Lumberjacks scored in the final minute of the third quarter and then thrice more in the fourth quarter to rally and take an 8-6 conference win.

Will led the Eagles with two goals in the game. Jakob Montessi (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) had a team-high four caused turnovers for Northwestern. Brenden Schuffenhauer (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) gathered 10 ground balls and won 11 faceoffs to lead both teams. Robert McHenry (Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) had 20 saves in goal while the Lumberjacks had 11.

Up next for the Eagles is a journey to Holland, Michigan to take on Hope College at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 9.
