Softball Begins Florida Trip With Two Victories

Clermont, FL –– The University of Northwestern softball team (2-2) opened their Florida trip with a doubleheader sweep of Adrian and Regis Colleges. The Eagles won game one against Adrian on Friday morning by a score of 6-3 and then defeated Regis 15-7 (F/6) later on in the afternoon.

Game One

The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third, which was enough for Briggs Carlson (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) as she shut down the Bulldogs' offense. Jadyn Iverson (West Fargo, N.D./West Fargo) helped lead the Eagles with a 2-3 day at the plate. Mikayla Gee (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall) had two RBIs, and Telma Roesler (Hastings, Minn./Crown College) and Sydney Lane (Altoona, Iowa/Grand View Christian) recorded one RBI.

Adrian tied the game in the top of the sixth, but Northwestern bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the frame before Carlson shut the door in the seventh.

The senior threw seven innings in the circle as she recorded her and the team's first win of the season.  She struck out three and gave up three earned runs over the contest.

Game Two

Regis jumped out to an early lead in game two thanks to a two-run first and a three-run second. Northwestern grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the second, though, as six Eagles came across the plate.

Reganne Henning (Beatrice, Neb./Beatrice) led off the inning with a single before advancing to third on Hannah Woodworth's (Panora, Iowa/Panorama) single. The two base runners then executed a double steal to bring Henning across the plate. Grace Bentley (Omaha, Neb./Wheaton College) singled home Woodworth, Megan Lundt (Frisco, Texas/Central Methodist) drew a walk, and Bentley came around to score on an error on a stolen base attempt. Briggs Carlson (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) and Sydney Lane (Altoona, Iowa/Grand View Christian) also reached on errors as the Eagles took advantage of Regis's defensive struggles to tie the game. Telma Roesler (Hastings, Minn./Crown College) gave the Eagles the lead with an RBI single to make it 6-5.

Regis was able to tie it in the fourth, but Northwestern once again hung a crooked number to take the lead for good. Mikayla Gee (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall) led off a single, and Carlson brought her home. Roesler reached on Regis's third error of the inning, which drove in Lane, and Roesler scored on Woodworth's RBI single to make it 9-6.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles used six hits to extend the lead to 14-7. Kate Beer (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake), Gee, Carlson, Lane, and Roesler all reached with one-out, as Lane, Roesler, and Lundt recorded RBIs in the frame. Northwestern ended the game in the sixth as Joelle Bounds (Verndale, Minn./Verndale Public) drove in Gee to make it an eight-run game.

Northwestern recorded fifteen hits as ten Eagles reached base in the afternoon contest. Roesler drove in three runs and scored a run from the three-spot in the lineup. Diana Boyce (Phoenix, Ariz./Park City) got the start in the circle and gave up two earned runs in an inning of work. Emma Heffron (Altoona, Iowa/Grand View Christian) came in and recorded her first collegiate win as she struck out four, allowed one earned run, and scattered three hits in her five innings of work.
