Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | David Pederson

UNW Falls 10-7 to Marian

ST. PAUL, Minn.- On a chilly Saturday afternoon the University of Northwestern Men's Lacrosse team hosted Marian University. The game was tied at halftime but the visitors pulled away in the second half and UNW dropped the contest 10-7.

Bryce Schmidgall (Hancock, Minn./Hancock), who has had a great start to the season for the Eagles, started the scoring when he scored an unassisted goal early in the first quarter. Four minutes later, Marian would tie the game with a goal of their own. Lucas Peters (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) would continue the seesaw start to the match by scoring a goal for Northwestern to put the Eagles back in front. Marian would close out the first quarter with two goals to take a 3-2 lead into the second frame.

Another Marian goal early in the second quarter would give the visitors a 4-2 lead, but before the whistle blew to signal the halftime break, the Eagles would fight their way back into the game. Jakob Montessi (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) assisted on a Joseph Will (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake) goal which was followed by an unassisted goal by Andrew Skoglund (Northfield, Minn./Homeschool) and the game was tied 4-4 going into halftime.

The third quarter ended up being the difference in the game. Marian came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders and scored four unanswered goals in the quarter to take a 8-4 lead as the fourth and final quarter commenced.

The Eagles would improve their play in the fourth quarter, however it was not enough to come back and steal a win in front of the home crowd. Joseph Will (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake) and Bryce Schmidgall (Hancock, Minn./Hancock) each scored their second goals of the day in the fourth quarter, and Sam Moses (Wasau, Wis./Wasau East) got into the action by assisting on Schmidgall's goal and scoring one of his own in the final quarter. Moses' goal would be the final one of the afternoon as the Eagles would drop the contest 10-7.

It was an evenly matched contest with the teams finishing the game with the exact same amount of shots, 31. The Eagles had 26 shots on goal while Marian fired 21 shots on net. Robert McHenry (Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) had 11 saves in net for UNW.

The Eagles will be back in action at Reynolds Field for another home game on Wednesday, March 30th against North Central University.
