MADISON, Wis. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team traveled to Edgewood College for a battle of Eagles vs. Eagles on Saturday. UNW was victorious, taking a 15-8 win.
The Eagles opened the game with four consecutive goals to go up 4-0.
Ava Whitcomb (Otsego, Minn./Rogers) scored the first and fourth, with
Samantha Wiebold (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) and
Cara Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) scoring the second and third, respectively.
After an Edgewood goal to make it 4-1, Smith found the back of the net again to retake the four goal lead for UNW.
A pair of Edgewood goals followed to cut the score to 5-3, but Northwestern responded with three straight goals to go up 8-3. Whitcomb,
Emma Snyder (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park), and
Maddie Nimmo (Somerset, Wis./Hill-Murray) each scored to put those three goals on the board for UNW.
After another pair of Edgewood goals to make it 8-5, Smith scored her third of the night for a hat trick.
Edgewood got another goal to make it 9-6, but this time Northwestern went on a five-goal run to effectively ice the game. In that stretch of goals, Wiebold scored twice to accumulate a hat trick, Smith scored her fourth of the game, and both
Lizzie Gray (Richfield, Minn./Homeschool) and
Emma Ruegemer (Cold Spring, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) scored their first of the game.
Wiebold would score once more for Northwestern to tie Smith with the team-lead of four goals in the game. In addition to her scoring, Smith also had a team-high seven caused turnovers and eight ground balls.
Edgewood would score twice more but it would fall far short as Northwestern earned the 15-8 win.
Up next for the Eagles is a return home for a 4:00 P.M. match on Saturday, March 26, against William Penn University.
