MONMOUTH, Ill. – The University of Northwestern St. Paul Men's Lacrosse defeated Monmouth College in a road contest on Friday evening in a 16-4 final.
The Eagles scored the first two goals of the contest and never looked back. Chase Marlenee (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) found the back of the net in the fourth minute of the match and then assisted Mat Anderson (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville) on a man-up goal to give UNW the 2-0 lead. Marlenee led the Eagles with six goals on the night and was tied for the team lead with two assists. The senior leads UNW with 28 goals on the year through six games.
Anderson scored the second most goals in the victory for Northwestern with five. The senior midfielder was a force for the Eagles defensive effort, leading UNW with three caused turnovers in the game.
After the pair of goals by Marlenee and Anderson, the Scots managed to score to cut the Eagles' lead in half. Northwestern answered with four consecutive goals to take a 6-1 lead midway through the second quarter. The Scots capitalized on a man-up opportunity to score again 30-seconds after the sixth Eagle goal, but again UNW responded with a string of consecutive goals, scoring seven in a row to take a 13-2 lead by the end of the third quarter.
Monmouth scored twice to open the fourth quarter, but, not to be outdone, Northwestern once again responded, scoring thrice to take the 16-4 lead. The Eagle defense did the rest and Northwestern left Illinois as victors with a perfect 3-0 conference record.
Christoph Tisdale (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) saved 14 shots in goal for the Eagles, earning his third win of the season.
Up next for Northwestern is a unique day of competition with Northland College, as the Eagles plan to continue their interrupted road contest with the Lumberjacks at home on Wednesday, April 14, in which UNW leads 16-4 with 1:29 remaining in the first half. The Eagles will then play their regularly scheduled match against the Lumberjacks following the conclusion of the remainder of the previous game.
