MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Northwestern St. Paul Men's Tennis team challenged the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars on Friday afternoon in a road non-conference contest. The Eagles were victorious in a 6-3 final to reach 20 wins on the season for the first time in program history. Northwestern has already broken the single-season wins record this season, and have now extended their record to a new landmark.
The team of Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) gave UNW a lead early, winning their #1 doubles match 8-1. Northwestern doubled their lead with a win at #3 doubles, with Collin Hemann (Newton, Iowa/Newton) and Zachary Revenig (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) claiming an 8-4 victory. The Cougars took the #2 doubles match to cut the Eagles' lead in half before the singles competition began.
Up 2-1, UNW quickly got a third team point as Revenig won his #6 singles match as his opponent retired after his 6-4 first set win. Morrell earned the fourth point of the night for the Eagles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at #1 singles. Up 4-2, Northwestern clinched the match winning fifth team point with Hemann's 6-3, 6-0 victory at #5 singles.
Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) earned the sixth and final team point for UNW with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) win at #3 singles.
Up next for Northwestern is a return to UMAC Tournament competition as the Eagles witll travel to face UW-Superior on Monday, May 3, at 4pm.
