Softball Tallies 33 Combined Runs to Sweep Crown

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn – The University of Northwestern St. Paul Softball team brought the bats on the road on Tuesday night against Crown College, scoring 33 runs in two games to sweep the Storm. In game one the Eagles erupted for 21 runs, powering them to a 21-6 win. Game two saw the Eagles pitch a shutout, besting the Storm by a score of 12-0.

Game One

The offense erupted in the second and fourth innings of game one, scoring nine runs in each of those innings. The Eagles tallied seventeen hits in the win with every player that saw a plate appearance getting on base at least once. The offense as a whole drew twelve walks to go along with their seventeen hits in game one

Ellie Ronning (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area) helped lead the Eagles at the plate, as she went 3-for-5 in game one while tallying four RBI. In the second inning, Ronning gave the Eagles the lead for good, driving in the go ahead single which put the Eagles up 4-3. In the fourth inning Ronning came up big again, singling to right and driving in the twentieth and twenty first runs of the game for Northwestern.

Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area) tallied three hits as well, going 3-for-4 with four RBI. In the second inning, Hardy singled and drove in the Eagles fourth run of the frame. In the fourth inning Hardy tripled, driving in three runs for the Eagles.

Briggs Carlson (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) was a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI, Carlson also scored five runs in game one. Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn/Kingsland) also came around to score four times for the Eagles.

Game Two

Game two was sparked by a fantastic performance on the mound, and a six run third inning to break it open for the Eagles. Carlson earned the win in the circle, pitching a complete game one hitter to lead the way for Northwestern.

The offense was led by Schmidt and Ronning. Both had three RBI in game two with the exclamation point coming in the third inning. Schmidt hit a bases clearing triple to drive in three runs with Ronning following that up with a triple of her own to drive in Schmidt.

The patient team-wide offensive approach continued in game two, drawing seven walks to go along with their ten hits.
