Northwestern Softball Falls to Luther College

Rochester, Minn. –– The University of Northwestern softball team (1-5) faced off twice on Saturday against the Luther College Norse (6-2). The teams met at the Rochester Dome on the campus of Rochester Community and Technical College. The Norse won game one 10-1 and game two 8-0.

Game One

Briggs Carlson (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) (0-1) got the start in the circle for the Eagles and recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first. Telma Roesler (Hastings, Minn./Crown College) led off the bottom half of the frame with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn/Kingsland) but she was left stranded in scoring position. Schmidt also recorded the Eagles' second hit of the day in the third with a two-out single back up the middle. She was a two-sport star today as she was 1-2 at the plate and led the Eagles on the hardwood with her career-high 16 points in the UMAC Women's Basketball semifinals against Bethany Lutheran.

Luther scratched their first run of the day across in the fourth and then added to their lead with a seven run top of the sixth. Northwestern managed to get one back in the bottom half of the frame. Carlson singled and scored after Rachel Linebaugh (Golden Valley, Minn./Grace Academy) reached on an error. Luther then added two more runs in the top of the seventh to make it 10-1.

Game Two

Luther started off right back where they finished game one with a two-spot in the bottom of the first. They added a third in the second and posted a crooked number in the third with three more to take a six-run lead. Luther kept adding on with a single run in both the fourth and fifth innings to win via run rule.

The Eagles recorded three hits in the contest as Hannah Woodworth (Panora, Iowa/Panorama), Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area), and Bridgette Kollos (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) all reached via singles. Samantha Burkhart (Salix, Iowa/Westwood) (1-2) pitched for the Eagles, and she gave up five earned runs in 4.2 innings of work.
