Softball Drops Two to St. Catherine University

St. Paul, Minn. –– The University of Northwestern softball team (3-14) lost twice to St. Catherine University (4-3) on Friday. St. Kate's won game one 11-2 (F/6) and game two 8-0 (F/5).

Game One
The Wildcats scored first with a two-run third inning. Northwestern battled back in the bottom half of the frame, as they got both runs back. Brooke Koelln (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) hit a one-out infield single and Briggs Carlson (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) hit a double to right center which put runners on second and third. Ellie Ronning (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area) followed with a two-out two-run double that clanged off the center field fence. Telma Roesler (Hastings, Minn./Crown College) drew a walk, but St. Kate's managed to keep the game tied.

After two St. Kate's runs in the fourth and another four in the fifth, Northwestern looked to work its way back into the game in the fifth. Carlson reached on a leadoff error and then Ellie Ronning (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area) singled to left to make it first and second with one out. Both runners were left stranded to keep the score 8-2 before St. Kate's scored three more times in the sixth. Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area) took a ten pitch walk in the sixth, but that was the only offense that the Eagles could muster.

Samantha Burkhart (Salix, Iowa/Westwood) got the start in the circle and threw the first 4.2 innings. Diana Boyce (Phoenix, Ariz./Park City) came in to get the final four outs of the contest.

Game Two

St. Kate's jumped ahead in the first on an RBI double. In the bottom of the second, Roesler led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. Kayla Hannasch (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) followed with her first hit of the season as she works her way back from an ACL injury. The Wildcats were able to escape thanks to a screaming line drive off the bat of Hannah Woodworth (Panora, Iowa/Panorama) right at the first baseman, and she stepped on first for the double play.

The Wildcats added two more in the third, four in the fourth, and an eighth run in the top of the fifth. In the fifth, Northwestern loaded the bases thanks to an error and two singles from Rachel Linebaugh (Golden Valley, Minn./Grace Academy) and Shelby Stoll (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo), but St. Kate's worked its way out of the jam.

Briggs Carlson (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) got the first ten outs for the Eagles in the circle. Diana Boyce (Phoenix, Ariz./Park City) came in for the second straight game and got the final five outs.
