HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team completed game one of two in their spring break performances. The Eagles faced off against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Monday afternoon in balmy, mid-60 degree weather. UNW went against tough competition as they lost 21-2 against the Engineers.
This is the first time in program history that these two teams have met. RPI is coached by
Leslie DeLano, who is in her 17
th season and is the most successful head coach in program history.
The Engineers, who went 8-6 last season (2019), qualified for the Liberty League Tournament for the second straight season with a 5-5 conference mark. RPI fell at Clarkson University in the opening round, 13-11. Previous to the 2019 season, the Engineers had made the postseason in two straight seasons after missing out the previous three.
The game stayed in favor of the Engineers for most of regulation as they scored 13 goals in the first half and eight in the second. Northwestern was able to get on the board each half, both times by sophomore
Samantha Wiebold (Farmington, Minn./Farmington). These were Wiebolds' first goals of the 2020 season to add onto her 34 tallied goals in 2019.
The Eagles will face Oneonta on March 10 to complete their spring break matches.
Northwestern's next home game will be held March 17 as they host the Hamline Pipers for a 7pm face off.
