Eagles Split in Series of Run Rule Decisions Monday at Spring Games

CLERMONT, FLA --  The University of Northwestern softball team returned to Spring Games action following an off day on Sunday. The Eagles put together a dominant 9-0, five inning win over Wisconsin Lutheran before falling to Bridgewater State in Monday's second contest.

The Eagles move to 3-9 on the year as they look to secure a few more wins in the four games left of Florida play. Action will resume on Tuesday against Washington College and Nebraska Wesleyan.

Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn/Kingsland) led the Eagles offensively in Monday's series, going 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and an .800 on-base percentage.

Two Midwest squads met up in Florida as UNW embarked on their seventh game of spring break action. The Eagles finally found their groove, putting together 12 hits to WLC's four to cruise to a 9-0 win.

The Eagles scored two right away in the top of the first when Kayla Hannasch (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) roped an RBI double to left center and Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn/Kingsland) followed with an RBI single up the middle.

The offensive dominance continued in the fifth when Northwestern combined for seven runs on eight hits. Ellie Ronning (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area) got things moving with a single up the middle before Schmidt followed with a two-RBI double, Faith Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Vallley-Watkins) singled to drive in two and Hannasch topped off the inning with a bases-clearing triple.

Lexi Kopacek (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) pitched a five-inning shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out two. She recorded her second win in the circle this season.

In what started as an evenly paced match-up, both teams went scoreless through three complete. Bridgewater State would break it open in the top of the fourth, putting together seven runs on three hits and two costly Northwestern defensive errors.

The seven runs would go unanswered as UNW put together just two hits and stranded three runners on base in the contest. Ellie Ronning (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area) and Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn/Kingsland) would record the lone UNW hits.

Northwestern will be back at it on Tuesday when they take on Washington College at 11:30 a.m. (EST) at Minneola Athletic Complex Field 2.
