ORLANDO, FL. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team competed in Friday morning action at Lake Cane Tennis Center when they met up with nonconference opponent, Monmouth College. The Eagles fell in a close 5-4 battle, finishing spring break play with a 3-2 overall mark to move to 6-4 this season.
It was Northwestern's bottom half of the lineup that carried them in Tuesday play. The no. 3 double team of
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian)e cruised to an 8-1 win to record UNW's only doubles victory on the day.
Additionally, it was
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens),
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) and
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian)e who picked up wins in singles play -- competing at Northwestern's no. 4, 5 and 6 positions, respectively. Studer cruised to a straight set, 6-2, 6-2 win. Geurkink fell in a close first set, but came back to win 6-1 in set two and take the super tiebreaker, 10-6. Isaac Velbersdyke dropped just one game in the no. 6 match, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Pending many schedule changes due to the COVID-19 outbreak, updates on when the men's tennis team will return to action is yet to be determined. Matches scheduled for March 20 against Marian and March 21 against Wartburg have been canceled at this time.
