Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women’s Lacrosse Second Half Struggles Lead to Loss

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team closed their 2019 season with a non-conference contest against the UW-River Falls Falcons. Northwestern looked to end the season with a win, but the Falcons second half offense was too much to handle. River Falls wins the Wednesday evening matchup by a final score of 20-17.

The first half of action was a back-and-forth contest between the two teams. Right when it seemed like one team was going to start pulling away, the other would answer back. The Eagles would have the upper hand heading into halftime, leading 10-7.

Northwestern hit a speed bump in the second, as they were outscored 7-2 in the first 15 minutes. The Eagle defense struggle to make stops, with the Falcons keeping up the pressure the whole period. The UNW offense would try to make a late push to end the game, but the stingy River Falls defense was too much to overcome.

Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) led the UNW offense on the night with four goals and two assists. Senior Jordryn Broberg tallied four goals in her final game in a Northwestern uniform. Fellow senior Hannah Shands (Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi) was able to added in three goals and an assist of her own, respectively. In net, Sydney Werlein (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) notched seven saves in the loss.

The Eagles finish the 2019 season with an overall record of 8-7, and land a seventh place standing their first season in the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference with a conference record of 7-6. Sherry cracks the Top 5 in the conference in both assists (27) and points (77). Werlein is also in the Top 10 among goalies with 116 saves.
