Men's Tennis Downs Superior 7-2, Advancing to UMAC Championship at Scholastica

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team welcomed UW-Superior to St. Paul for Wednesday afternoon Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) tournament play. The semifinal match, which featured the no. 2 seeded Eagles and no. 3 seeded Yellowjackets, showcased several tight matches enroute to a 7-2 Northwestern win. The Eagles improve to 15-8 this season.

UNW will advance to the 2019 UMAC tournament championship for the tenth straight time, all against top-seeded Scholastica. The Eagles have come out on top of the Saints in 2011 and 2018, last year earning Northwestern's first ever NCAA postseason appearance with a 5-4 upset.

Northwestern got off to a smooth start, cruising to three straight doubles wins. The no. 3 duo of Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield Senior) and Colton Paskewitz (Browerville, Minn/Staples) put together a dominant 8-2 win.

In singles action, Landon Ridpath (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech), Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Austin Bricker (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grand) -- playing the no. 1 through 3 spots, respectively -- recorded straight set wins. Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield Senior) recovered from a tough second set to pull off an exciting third set tiebreaker win (6-4, 1-6, 11-9). Wedin has won seven straight matches at the no. 5 spot, including a win over Scholastica on Saturday.

With Landon Ridpath's (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) win at no. 1 singles, the senior ties Northwestern record for singles win in a career (57).

The Eagles championship match against St. Scholastica is scheduled to take place Saturday, May 4 in Duluth, Minn. All tournament information including scores, recaps, team information and more can be found on the UMAC Men's Tennis Tournament page.
