ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Northwestern men's lacrosse team played their final game of the season Saturday evening against Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MLC) opponent Fontbonne University. The Eagles were able to pick up the 27-12 win against the Griffins to end their season 8-6 overall and 5-6 in conference contests, in the program's third season.
The Eagles got out to a hot start, jumping to a quick five goal lead over the Griffins. Fontbonne would answer back with four goals of their own in the first period. The rest of the first half was a back-and-forth battle, with each team finding the back of the net. Northwestern would hold on to an 11-8 lead entering halftime.
Northwestern dominated the second half, outscoring Fontbonne 16-4 in the final two frames of play. The Eagles were able to tally 65 shots to the Griffins 37, and forced 28 turnovers. As a team, UNW totaled 50 ground balls and completed 22-26 on clears.
Chase Marlenee (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) led the Eagle offense with seven goals and seven assists.
Keller Stephens (Lino Lakes, Minn./Mounds View) added an additional eight goals and three assists.
Noah Vander Kooi (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) and
Mat Anderson (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville) each notched five goals and an assist, respectively. In net,
Zach Shockency (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) totalled 11 saves in the win.
Vander Kooi and Stephens both rank in the top five in the conference in scoring with 57 and 51 goals respectively. Marlenee finishes second in the conference in assists 36, while Shockency is among the top goalies with 160 saves on the season.
