Eagles Fall to Wartburg; Respond with 8-0 Shutout Win Over Finlandia

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Northwestern softball team kicked off day two of Spring Games play Saturday morning when they matched-up with Wartburg College at Legends Field. The Eagles fell to the hard-hitting Knights, 11-2 in five innings before responding with an 8-0, five-inning shutout win over Finlandia. Northwestern moves to 5-3 on the year as they head into an off day in Florida.

Game One: Wartburg 11, Northwestern 2:
The Eagles put together a strong start against the Knights – scoring two quick runs on an Ellie Ronning (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area) crushed homerun to take an early lead. Unfortunately, Wartburg would hold UNW scoreless for the remainder of play.

The Knights put together 14 hits and 11 runs – propelled by scoring six in the first inning, to secure the eight run-rule win.

The Eagles recorded six hits by six different players in the loss. Wartburg wrapped up their Spring Games play on Saturday – leaving Florida with a 10-2 record.

Game Two: Northwestern 8, Finlandia 0
Northwestern was quick to respond from the first game loss, orchestrating a huge first inning against Finlandia.  The UNW offense was jumpstarted by an RBI double down the right field line from Ellie Ronning (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area). Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn/Kingsland) tacked on an infield single for another Eagle run before Kayla Madison (North Branch, Minn./Forest Lake) followed suit, driving a liner up the middle to give UNW a 3-0 edge. Taylor Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) drove in the Eagles fourth run of the inning as the Eagles put together five hits and left three runners stranded heading into two.

Northwestern continued to put pressure on Finlandia's defense. The Eagles added two more runs in the fourth before Briggs Carlson (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) tripled to right center, scoring two, to put an early end to the contest.

Abbie Nelson (Holdrege, Neb./Holdrege) got the nod for the Eagles, pitching nearly a perfect game after giving up no hits and walking just three. Nelson faced 19 batters and struck out six as she moves to 2-1 in the circle this year.

The Eagles tacked on 13 hits in the game, including five players who recorded two apiece. Briggs Carlson (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) and Megan Aasness (Fergus Falls, Minn./Hillcrest Academy) led with two RBI's in the win.

Through four games at the Spring Games, the Eagles are 2-2. Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn/Kingsland) leads the pack with six hits in 13 at bats, while Ellie Ronning (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area) has recorded four RBI's. Faith Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Vallley-Watkins) has added three stolen bases.

Northwestern will return to play on Monday, March 11 when they take on Franklin and Marshall College and the University of Dubuque at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla. Follow the action all week long at www.unweagles.com
