ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern softball team (22-14, 11-5) closed out its regular season in style Saturday, as the Eagles swept North Central University (7-25, 1-15) on a beautiful afternoon at Reynolds Field. UNW won game one, 9-2, before taking game two, 3-0.
Game One
The Eagles didn't waste any time, plating a whopping eight first-inning runs.
Kayla Madison (North Branch, Minn./Forest Lake )'s three-run single highlighted the frame. UNW tacked on its ninth run in the second inning via a Ciara Schietauer RBI single.
Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn/Kingsland) tallied three hits to lead the offensive charge, while
Lexi Kopacek (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (11-7) picked up the win in the circle after allowing just one earned run in six innings.
Game Two
UNW plated runs in the third, fifth and seventh innings thanks to
Kayla Madison (North Branch, Minn./Forest Lake )'s bat and rode
Moriah Maunu (Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake)'s complete-game shutout effort in the circle to tab a 3-0 win. Maunu (4-2) surrendered just four hits while posting eight strikeouts.
Madison – who generated all three of UNW's runs – finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.
Mindy Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) also posted three hits and used her wheels to score three runs and swipe a pair of bases.
