SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Northwestern softball team saw its six-game winning streak come to a close Tuesday, as the Eagles were swept at the University of Wisconsin-Superior (9-13, 3-1) in a pair of conference games. UNW (13-11, 2-2) dropped the opener 9-0 before coming up just short in game two, 5-4.
Game One
The Eagles couldn't generate any offense off of UWS starter Macy Hanson.
Mindy Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) accounted for two of UNW's three hits, while
Abbie Nelson (Holdrege, Neb./Holdrege) picked up the other base knock in a five-inning contest.
Nelson (6-5) was tagged with the loss in the circle, allowing five earned runs on seven hits.
Moriah Maunu (Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake) pitched in relief, throwing the final 1.1 innings.
Game Two
Trailing 5-1 in the top of the fifth, the Eagles pushed three runs agree in the next two frames, but weren't able to get the tying run home, falling in heartbreaking fashion, 5-4.
Abbie Nelson (Holdrege, Neb./Holdrege) launched a solo home run in the second inning to get UNW on the board. Nelson finished with two hits and two RBI.
Ellie Ronning (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area ) and
Ciara Scheithauer (Rib Lake, Wis./Rib Lake) both tabbed a pair of hits, while
Kayla Madison (North Branch, Minn./Forest Lake ) and
Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn/Kingsland) both picked up an RBI.
Lexi Kopacek (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) went the distance, surrendering four earned runs on six hits.
The Eagles will next be in action Thursday when Bethany Lutheran comes to Reynolds Field for a doubleheader. The series was supposed to be played in Mankato but has since been moved due to field conditions.
