ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern softball team rallied in game two to pick up its second-straight sweep, as the Eagles downed Hamline University by scores of 9-8 and 3-1 Tuesday at Reynolds Field. UNW betters its record to 11-9, while the Pipers fall to 7-7.
Game One
UNW used a six-run fourth inning to propel it to a 9-8 win in the opener.
Kayla Madison (North Branch, Minn./Forest Lake ) led the charge at the plate, as the freshman finished 2-for-4 and posted three RBI.
Moriah Maunu (Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake) had a two-run single to highlight the scoring in the fourth.
Abbie Nelson (Holdrege, Neb./Holdrege) was credited with the win, hurling the first four innings before Maunu finished things up.
Game Two
After neither team was able to generate any offense through the first five innings, the Pipers plated a run in the top of the sixth. The Eagles then responded with three runs in the home half of the frame and shut the door in top of the seventh to earn the win and sweep.
Lexi Kopacek (Willmar, Minn./Willmar),
Ciara Scheithauer (Rib Lake, Wis./Rib Lake) and
Faith Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Vallley-Watkins) all delivered run-scoring singles in the sixth to produce UNW's three runs. Scheithauer and Forcier both finished with two hits apiece, while Kopacek hurled a gem, going the distance in the circle, allowing just the one run on three hits.
The Eagles will return to Reynolds Field Friday for a conference doubleheader with Northland. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. Fans can find more information at unweagles.com and by following @unwsoftball on Twitter.
