Women’s Soccer Wins UMAC Tournament; Advance to NCAA Tournament

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern hosted the UW-Superior Yellowjackets in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament Championship match Saturday afternoon. This was the third meeting between the two teams, with UNW winning the previous two games by combined scores of 6-1. The Eagles win the match by a final score of 2-0 to become the 2018 UMAC Tournament Champions.

The Northwestern offense was in control of the pace in the first half, holding the 12-1 advantage in shots. The Eagles were able to keep the ball in Superior's side of the field for the majority of the half, but the Yellowjacket defense held strong. The game was scoreless entering the break.

The Eagles built off their pressure after halftime. Emily Currie (Minneapolis, Minn./Homeschool) got the Eagles on the board first, scoring a header from a Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) cross. Northwestern was not done yet, as they would add another goal from RJ Mullin (Temecula, Calif./Rancho Christian) off of an Alexis Albrecht (Fargo, N.D./Sheyenne) corner kick. Currie was named the tournament MVP for her play through the last two games.

With the win, Northwestern earns an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The team will find out who they play Monday, November 5 during the selection show. For more information, fans should visit www.unweagles.com and follow @unwwsoc on Instagram and Twitter.
