ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern softball team closed out its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season slate with a sweep of Martin Luther College (13-22, 6-10 UMAC) on Senior Day Saturday at Reynolds Field. The Eagles – who move to 16-18 overall and 12-4 in league play with the pair of wins – took game one, 8-0, before winning the finale, 8-1.
Game One
Northwestern did its damage in the first two innings, scoring six in the first and adding two more in the second to earn the run-rule victory in five innings.
Megan Threlkeld (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) became the program's new career leader in doubles, as Threlkeld smacked a pair of two-baggers to surpass Amanda Rogers' (2007-10) mark of 48 doubles in a career. Threlkeld's first double of the day was a RBI knock that scored
Mindy Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) in the bottom of the first.
Colleen Feldheim (Northfield, Ill./Loyola Academy) also knocked a double as she finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Fellow senior
Ellen Larkin (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) also posted a multi-hit game, as the catcher went 2-for-2 at the dish.
Lauren Silbernick (Osakis, Minn./Osakis) was again lights out in the circle, as the senior allowed just three hits, while not giving up a run or issuing a walk. The right-hander also fanned two Knight batters.
Game Two
The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first, as
Colleen Feldheim (Northfield, Ill./Loyola Academy) delivered a two-run double. UNW added two more in the third before a three-run fifth put the game out of reach.
Mindy Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) stole the show, as she went 4-for-4 and scored twice. Starting pitcher
Moriah Maunu (Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake) helped her own cause at the plate, as she laced three hits, including an RBI single in the third.
Jennifer Ankrom (New Hampton, Iowa/New Hampton) crossed home twice and drilled a pair of hits to contribute to the offensive attack.
Maunu scattered six hits in her complete-game effort, allowing just one run.
The Eagles will close out their regular season with a doubleheader with Hamline University of Monday at Reynolds Field. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. Fans can find more information on the softball program at
