DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Northwestern softball team suffered just its second and third losses in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play Saturday, as the Eagles dropped a doubleheader at the College of St. Scholastica. The Eagles fell by scores of 9-1 and 13-3 at Kenwood Field.
UNW falls to 15-19 overall and 9-3 in league play, while CSS moves to 17-13 overall and 9-1 in conference contests.
Game One
The host Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead early and never looked back, taking the opener 9-1. UNW's lone run came in the top of the fifth when
Kaylee Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley Watkins) came around to score.
Megan Threlkeld (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville),
Colleen Feldheim (Northfield, Ill./Loyola Academy) and
Kaylee Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley Watkins) accounted for UNW's three hits in the contest.
Lauren Silbernick (Osakis, Minn./Osakis) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing five earned runs in 5.2 innings of work.
Game Two
The Eagles fell behind 8-0 after the first inning and couldn't overcome the big deficit, falling 13-3.
UNW battled until the final pitch, getting on the board in the top of the third when
Mindy Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) stole third and then scored on an errant throw.
Jennifer Ankrom (New Hampton, Iowa/New Hampton) highlighted the afternoon in Duluth for UNW, smashing a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to trim the Saints' lead. It was Ankrom's team-leading third home run of the season.
Ann Lokke (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis),
Colleen Feldheim (Northfield, Ill./Loyola Academy),
Emily Geurkink (Baldwin, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville) and Ankrom all posted a hit apiece at the plate.
Meghan Schroeder (Big Lake, Minn./Spectrum) was tagged with the loss in the circle.
Ann Lokke (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) worked the final three innings in relief of Schroeder.
