ST.PAUL – The University of Northwestern (1-6) women's lacrosse contended against Clarke University (2-3) in a close 11-10 loss at Reynolds Field on Monday evening.
Northwestern's
Eugenia Chamberlain (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) was the first to score in the game, but Clarke did not hesitate to answer back by scoring three goals.
Rachel Hunt (Mt. Horeb, Wis./Homeschool) was the next in line to find the back of the net, putting the Eagles at a score of 2-3 with just over 13:00 left in the half. Clarke then scored three more goals, as UNW sank one more. The Crusaders led 6-3 to conclude the first half.
To open the second half, Clarke found the net two minutes into the half to give them a 7-4 lead. Northwestern's
Emily Wirtz (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) answered back at the 9:00 mark by scoring for the Eagles. Clarke then completed a strong run by dropping four more goals to conclude the match.
At the 18:00 mark, the real window of opportunity gave way as the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to catch the Crusaders, but UNW fell short by just one goal, concluding the contest with a 11-10 final score.
Northwestern's game leaders for goals were:
Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Montomedi) (4), Wirtz (2), Chamberlain, who also finished with five assists (2),
Megan Cotter (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (1), and Hunt (1). Making her first appearance as goalie,
Jodi Bertrand (Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls) closed the match with 12 total saves.
