Softball triumphs over Rams with 15-2 victory in first conference game

ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern- St. Paul defeated North Central University 15-2 in the first conference game of the season Monday night at Reynolds Field. With the strongest offense game of the season, the Eagles secured 11 runs in the first inning alone.

Emily Guerkink made one of the best defensive catches to date with amazing diving play in right field to end the top of the first. Megan Threlkeld (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) started the game off with a double and later stole third due to the first wild pitch of the game. Kaylee Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley Watkins) homered down the right field line, earning two RBIS. With one out on the board, two runners scored with another Rams wild pitch, bringing the score to 4-0. With a collection of errors on behalf of the visitors' defense, the Eagles kept racking up stolen bases, quickly bringing the score to 11-0 by the end of the first inning.

Emily Guetter's single to right field brought in Feldheim who walked and was advanced following Larkin's grounder. Forcier added a double to the table, scoring Guetter at home. Jennifer Ankrom (New Hampton, Iowa/New Hampton) was the next to the plate and brought in Threlkeld for an unearned run as she grounded to North Central's short stop. With three runs in the second, Northwestern now led 14-0.

North Central made an offensive push in the top of the fourth as Roth hit a double right away into center field. Pieper doubled down the left line, scoring Roth in. With a Rams single, Piper advanced to third in the scoring position and capitalized on a wild pitch. However, UNW's defense didn't allow any more opportunities, ending the inning with one man left on base.

Northwestern made their last run of the game in the bottom of the fourth as Amy Johnson (Delano, Minn./Homeschool) walked and later scored due to a North Central fielding error.
