ST. PAUL— In the women's home opener, the Eagles won 3-2 to Northland College on Friday afternoon. With goals across the board, the Eagles took their first win of the season on the newly renovated Reynolds Field.
The beginning was off to a slow start until Northwestern's
Jordan Skarin (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) put up the first goal of the game in the 24th minute. In her debut game this season, Skarin made a hard shot to the upper right corner, assisted by senior
Jenna Powers (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) from the corner. The first half continued with a quiet scoreboard until the last three minutes of the half with two Lumberjill goals in the 42nd and 43rd minute.
Taking a while to warm-up from halftime, the Eagles responded in the second period with a goal by freshman
Emily Goeppinger (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) assisted by
Sarah Scinto (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) in the 29 minutes left on the clock.
Northwestern took the lead with just under 10 minutes when
Anna Hitterdal (St. Louis Park, Minn./Southwest Christian) fired a goal in the lower left just under 10 minutes left. With nearly the same number of shots on goal, the Eagles and Lumberjills had a very similar offense and played neck-in-neck for the 90 minutes of play.
Eagle goalkeeper Miranda Carda (Andover, Minn./Andover) saved 70 percent of goals this afternoon with a busy day in the net. The Eagles took their first victory this season in the first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) game.
The Eagles will host the College of St. Scholastica tomorrow afternoon at noon at Reynolds Field. Non-conference play will continue at Hamline University on Tuesday night at 4 p.m.
