Box Score
DULUTH, Minn. – The ball did not land in favor of the Eagle offense Saturday, as the University of Northwestern came up short in a 5-0 loss versus the College of St. Scholastica. The Northwestern defense withstood 27 shots including 16 on goal, but the lack of return ended up being the downfall for the visiting team.
St. Scholastica got on the board early, as Casey Mitchell notched her team's first score of the game at the 2:26 mark. UNW continued to withstand more pressure, holding the Saints to a 1-0 lead until the 25:02 point when another goal doubled the home team's lead.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, much of the same offensive tempo continued in favor of CSS as would notch its third tally of the half with 1:55 to play, sending the game into halftime with UNW trailing by a trio.
The momentum progressed for the Duluth hosts with yet another push just 40 seconds into the second period. Shannon Carlson booted a ball towards the crossbar and back in on the left side of the goal to secure a 4-0 margin.
Emily Johnson (Esko, Minn./Esko) came up big in the next minutes with four consecutive saves but the visiting team on the scoreboard was not able to convert defensive pressure into offense, leaving the score the same.
The final push came with under 20 minutes to go with Shannon Carlson making it a double-day after her kick made it through the Eagle backline. As both teams left the turf, CSS had secured a 5-0 victory.
In the backfield, Johnson totaled 11 saves amidst 16 shots on goal, including seven in the second half alone. UNW earned one corner kick but in comparison to the home team's nine it was not enough to force any momentum in the Eagles' favor.
Northwestern (2-4-1, 1-2-1 conference) will return to Reynolds Field for a home contest on Friday, October 4 as the team takes on the University of Minnesota Morris at 4:15 p.m. Both
