ST. PAUL – After a 10-day break from competition, the University of Northwestern played its first home game of the season on Tuesday afternoon against Augsburg College. The Auggies capitalized on early scoring to take home the 6-0 victory amidst big defensive stops by UNW.
The early minutes saw both teams make their way across the midline as possession of the ball was exchanged. Following a pair of Eagles shots, Augsburg got on the board first after Olivia Muyres found the back of the net on a Marta Anderson pass at the 10:38 mark. The visitors struck again just under three minutes later, and twice more after the 20th minute to take a 4-0 advantage in the first half.
Even with the scoring margin, the Eagles posted key defensive stops headlined by goalkeeper
Emily Johnson (Esko, Minn./Esko). The senior tallied eight saves among 18 Auggie shots in the first 45 minutes alone. Offensively, the home team on the scoreboard posted a shot total of four, outlasted by Augsburg's 18.
The second half began with another Johnson save just three minutes in, but yet another attack by the Auggies led to their fifth goal of the contest. Scoring came in a pair, as 2:23 later the sixth and final goal of the came found the back of the UNW net.
Northwestern continued to battle, as the squad posted seven more shots after the 6-0 lead was established. Johnson picked up credit for five more saves in the contest before leaving the game with a total of 13. Offensively the home team improved from the first period to the second, forcing seven shots in the final 45 minutes.
The Purple and Gold had 22 players get into the game, with seven making offensive attacks on the Augsburg goal.
Northwestern (1-2) will now have another extended break before beginning its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) season on Friday, September 20 as it will host Martin Luther College in a 4:15 p.m. matchup, followed by a 2:15 p.m. home contest on Saturday, September 21 versus Bethany Lutheran College.
