WSOC: Eagles conclude opening weekend with 1-1 record

Box Score

ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team was out to start its 2013 season with two wins in as many days, but a pair of goals by Central College (Iowa) held the Eagles off from accomplishing that task Saturday afternoon. In an afternoon that featured high temperatures, UNW battled through but it was too little, too late for the squad that ended opening weekend with a 1-1 record.

The contest started off with few offensive attacks, but as the 14th minute passed, the shots began to pick up, leaving Northwestern needing to withstand the pressure. The Eagle crew held off seven shots before the 35:59 mark when Emily Saville found a hole and scored the first goal of the game, leaving the team from Iowa with a 1-0 advantage that would remain throughout the rest of the half. In the first 45 minutes of play the Purple and Gold tallied three shots in comparison to 13 by the Dutch. On the other end of the field, UNW grabbed seven saves and withstood three corner kicks from their opponents.

The second half continued much of the same trend from the first period as Central continued to force pressure towards the Eagle goal. Just 13:43 into the half, the Dutch once again scored leaving Northwestern with a 0-2 deficit as time kept on rolling. UNW was able to force three more shots before time ran out, but the Central defense held strong until the end and sent the Eagles home with a 1-1 record on the weekend.

Continuing with a consistent theme throughout the contest, UNW was outshot 13-3 in the last 45 minutes of action, while also earning just one corner kick in comparison to Central's four. On offense, the Eagles spread out the attack with Lauren Cleope (Manila, Philippines/Faith Academy), Lindsay Halvorson (Elk River, Minn./Elk River), Abbey Lamfers (Richfield, Minn./Edina High Scool), and Jordan Skarin (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) each having a hand in the scoring attempts. Defensively, the tables were turned as Emily Johnson (Esko, Minn./Esko) and company earned 15 saves in contrast to three for the Dutch.

After two days of non-conference matchups, Northwestern (1-1 overall) will now receive some well-deserved time off from competition until their next contest. On Tuesday, September 10, the Eagles will host Augsburg College in a 4 p.m. home game at Reynolds Field. Both live stats and video will be available for the matchup.
