Northwestern edged by visiting Hamline

Box Score

ST. PAUL – It was a defensive outing for the shorthanded University of Northwestern women's soccer team on Tuesday as the Eagles withstood 30 shots in a 5-0 loss to visiting Hamline University. Playing with a smaller roster than it has been familiar with due to injuries, UNW was allowed just two shots in the matchup that saw an abundance of defensive stops on the home team's end of the field.

The Snelling Avenue visitors led early, notching its first goal at the 3:15 mark, just six seconds after the Pipers' boot towards goal. The momentum remained mostly within Hamline's possession for the next time being, but Jordan Skarin (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) briefly showed signs of UNW offense with her push towards goal at the 17:05 mark. Soon following the shot, however, Hamline was back on the board with another score.

The Eagles remained on the defense for the remainder of the period, allowing one more tally on the margin at the 30:25 point. In all, the Purple and Gold was successful in fending off 10 shots in the first 45 minutes of action.

The second half featured more Hamline offense countered with a scrappy UNW backline. The Pipers would land three more goals on the final score, but not without a fight from the home team. Miranda Carda (Andover, Minn./Andover) had a hand in 12 saves in her first career start in goal, evening her first half total of six with the same number in the second period.

Northwestern (2-7-1 overall, 1-4-1 conference) will seek out its second win of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) portion of its schedule on Friday as the team will once again take the field at home for a duel with North Central university. A 3:15 p.m. start time is slated for Friday's game.
