NEW ULM, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team utilized two second-half comebacks to bring the contest within one score, but Martin Luther College proved to be too much for the Eagles in the end, winning 3-2 in Saturday's matinee matchup. UNW saw two different players notch goals in the contest in which the Knights earned the upper hand in offensive opportunities.
The host Martin Luther was credited for every shot in the first in 30:08 of action, with two goals scored during that time period. Once Northwestern's offense got rolling, it was not long before the squad was on the board as
Jordan Skarin (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) found the back of the net in the 33
rd minute. The goal, secured on UNW's third attempt, would soon be followed by another MLC score less than two minutes later to hand the hosts a 3-1 lead heading into halftime.
As the second period kicked off, the Purple and Gold showcased its resiliency as Skarin made it a double day with another goal sent past the Martin Luther defense. The freshman's boot just 8:05 into the second half cut the game deficit down to a 3-2 status.
The home team on the scoreboard responded with its fourth goal of the 90 minute game just over four minutes following Skarin's successful boot to once again give MLC the two-shot upper hand. The second comeback ensued, this time courtesy of an
Allie Franzen (Andover, Minn./Legacy Christian ) assist preceding a
Jenna Power (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley)'s attack that cut the deficit in half at the 61:30 point.
As was the theme of the contest, the Knights would once again secure their lead with a final goal as 17 seconds remained on the clock. That tally proved to be the final deciding factor in the joust as both teams left the field with a 5-3 outcome in favor of MLC.
Northwestern (5-11-1 overall, 4-7-1 conference) came up on the low end of the shot chart, posting 16 in comparison to the home team on the scoreboard's total of 43. On the flipside,
Emily Johnson (Esko, Minn./Esko) solidified credit for 19 saves just five days after setting the program single-game record in that category.
UNW will wrap up its home campaign on Tuesday, October 29 as the Eagles host Jamestown College in a 4 p.m. nonconference event. The last time the Eagles faced off with the Jimmies was on October 15, 2012, ending in favor of Jamestown 2-1.
