WSOC: BLC corner kick goal bests UNW in 1-0 fashion

Box Score

MANKATO, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team doubled the shot count of its Bethany Lutheran College opponent, but a corner kick by the home team found the back of the net just 1:25 into the second half to secure a 1-0 victory in favor of the Vikings. The Eagles notched 26 offensive shots, including seven on goal, in the 90 minutes of action.

UNW came out of the gates with an offensive mindset, posting the first two shots on goal in at the 3:02 and 4:18 marks. The two teams exchanged possession for the remainder of the half, with the Eagles maintaining the upper hand in opportunities on the BLC end of the field. Northwestern earned three times the chances on offense that the Vikings did, but a diligent home team defense held strong, sending the game into halftime with a 0-0 tie.

As the second half got underway Bethany Lutheran earned a corner kick 1:09 into the period and converted it into a score to take a 1-0 advantage with a lot of time remaining on the game clock. Even with a steady stream of pressure on the offensive front, the Purple and Gold was unable to send a shot to the back of the net and came up on the low end of the final outcome.

A positive result for UNW came in the shot total as the visitors doubled the Vikings' count of 13. The Eagles also tallied three more shots on goal than its fellow Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) foe.
Northwestern (5-10-1, 4-6-1 UMAC) will look to secure its fifth league win on Saturday is it travels to New Ulm, Minn. for a contest against the Martin Luther College Knights. A 12 noon kickoff is slated for the game.
