PAUL – In the battle of neighboring schools, the University of Northwestern women's soccer team spent a lot of time on the defensive end of the field in a 3-0 Tuesday afternoon loss to Bethel University, but amidst the 43 shots from the visiting team, the Eagles withstood 40 in nonconference matchup. Headlining the UNW backline was Emily Johnson's record-breaking 31 saves, a total that bested the previous single game total last set in 1997.
The Royals did not waste much time in attacking the Eagle goal, as Jessica Huseby notched the first shot of the contest at the 1:43 mark. The visitors kept attacking, but Johnson was able to fend off five jousts until Bethel first got on the board in the 16
th minute.
The pattern of the contest stayed strong for the remainder of the half as the offensive momentum remained in favor of the Arden Hills, Minn. squad. The next score game at the 36:36 time stamp as the Royals doubled their lead heading into halftime.
The 53
rd minute featured one more successful shot for Bethel as the visiting team on the scoreboard secured what would be the final outcome.
On a positive note for UNW, Johnson remained pesky in goal, racking up her 31
st in at the 86:53 point of the contest. The Purple and Gold posted just one shot in the contest, but that result led to high defensive numbers on the other end of the field.
Prior to the Eagles' matchup with Bethel, the Johnson's career high was 15 saves in a contest, set on August 31 of this year. With her feat in the 90 minutes of action on Tuesday, the senior not only doubled her former personal best, but also established herself in the women's soccer program record books. Johnson's final total was eight tallies higher than the previous program single game record, set three times by Shannon Rising in the 1996 and 1997 season.
Northwestern (5-9-1 overall, 4-5-1 conference) will now look for a solid couple days of practice before traveling down to Mankato and New Ulm, Minn. for an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) weekend of action. The Eagles will first face off with the Vikings of Bethany Lutheran on Friday at 1 p.m. and will follow that contest with a 12 noon kickoff with Martin Luther College on Saturday.
