A golden goal! Women's soccer uses extra time to take 3-2 win

Box Score

ST. PAUL – It took a few extra minutes, but the University of Northwestern women's soccer team was able to fend off Northland College on Saturday afternoon, outscoring the visitors 3-2 in an overtime victory. The Eagles led heading into the final minute of regulation, but a last-second shot by the LumberJills sent the game into a third period.

Northwestern was the first team to push offensive momentum, but the LumberJills notched the first goal at the 12:36 mark to take a 1-0 advantage. UNW responded before much time had ran off the clock as Lindsay Halvorson (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) netted a score of her own to even the margin that would stand throughout the remainder of the half.

The home team was outshot 13-12 in the first 45 minutes of action while UNW won the battle of corner kicks, 4-2.

The second half kicked off with back and forth shifts across the midline and featured offensive attacks by each team. The score looked like it would remain at 1-1 as regulation ran out, but Jordan Skarin (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) changed the tide for the Eagles with her successful boot in the 83rd minute to add a tally to the home squad's total.

As each minute passed, Northland continued to play aggressively with hopes of evening the score to force overtime. It looked like the game would end in favor of the Purple and Gold but with just seven seconds ticking off the clock the LumberJills found a way to send a ball in the net and eliminate the previous UNW lead.

The two teams regrouped and headed into overtime with a few minutes of consistent action until Skarin yet again made the difference for the home squad and netted her third score of the weekend, a golden goal that ended the matchup in favor of the Eagles.

Even amidst facing a 25-24 shot deficit, UNW persevered and found 16 opportunities on goal in comparison to the Ashland, Wis. visitors' 11. Emily Johnson (Esko, Minn./Esko) picked up the win in goal with nine saves through the 94:27 of action.

Northwestern (5-8-1 overall, 4-5-1 conference) will have a two-day break from competition before hitting the game field yet again for a Tuesday nonconference contest versus the neighbors from just up the road, Bethel University. The start time for the matchup at Reynolds Field is set for 4 p.m.
