ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team held strong the early minutes of action, but it was the remainder of the contest that ended in favor of its opponent on Friday afternoon as the Eagles dropped a 9-1 matchup to the College of St. Scholastica. UNW would tie the game at the 6:26 mark, but a scoreless drought for the remainder of the contest gave the Saints the upper hand.
The visitors from Duluth, Minn. got on the board as a result of its first shot at the 4:07 mark, and returned with another joust just 32 seconds later. Northwestern returned the favor as
Jordan Skarin (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) utilized a breakaway situation with help from a
Lindsay Halvorson (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) assist to slip the ball past the CSS goalkeeper and tie the game at 1's apiece less than two minutes after the Saints' score.
Even amidst a pair of Eagle attacks, St. Scholastica maintained possession of momentum and the result would manifest itself in three more goals within a 5:08 time span. In sum CSS would notch a shot count of 17 in the first half while UNW posted three attempts.
As the whistle blew to start the second half the teams continued to force pressure on both ends of the field with St. Scholastica holding the upper hand. The visiting team on the scoreboard notched five goals among 11 shots to secure a 9-1 final outcome.
The Eagles were held without an offensive attack in the second half but withstood nine corner kicks and notched a total of 12 saves throughout 90 minutes of action. Additionally, the Purple and Gold became the first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) team to score on the league-undefeated Saints.
Northwestern (4-8-1, 3-5-1 UMAC) will host its final home conference game of the year on Saturday as Northland College makes its way to the UNW campus for a 12 p.m. kickoff. The Eagles last faced the LumberJills on September 27 and came out on top, with a 4-1 margin.
