ST. PAUL – It's safe to say the University of Northwestern women's soccer team will look fondly upon its second-half performance in Friday's 3-1 victory over North Central University. After trailing 1-0 at the half, the Eagles' offense found success in the second period and landed a trio of scores to earn its second Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) victory over the 2013 campaign.
Northwestern owned the tempo early and pushed three attacks to the Ram defense within the first 10 minutes. The Eagles outshot their opponents 7-3 in the first half, but NCU's boot at the 38:16 mark sailed into the top part of the home team's goal to lift the visitors to a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.
UNW responded quickly with a goal of its own in the second period as
Sarah Scinto (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) found
Lauren Cleope (Manila, Philippines/Faith Academy) to even the score at one tally apiece just four over four minutes after halftime.
The Purple and Gold continued to make its way down to the Rams' end of the field and found success again at the 76:37 point as the roles reversed with Cleope finding Scinto for the game-changing score.
Although both teams rallied back and forth, the final golden boot would come with 1:48 left on the clock as Cleope once again made her presence felt with her second goal and fifth point of the game.
The home team on the scoreboard held NCU to a shot-less second period and finished the contest with a 19-3 upper hand in the offensive statistic category.
With the win, Northwestern improved its overall record to 3-7-1 and also secured a 2-4-1 mark in UMAC play. The Eagles will once again face North Central on Saturday in a 12 p.m. matchup at the Coon Rapids (Minn.) Soccer Complex to round off its weekend of league play.
