MANKATO, Minn. – The Northwestern College women's soccer finished their opening weekend of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play unbeaten after a 3-1 victory over Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday. The Eagles continued their well-rounded offensive play as three different players scored in the win for the second day in a row.
NWC's first goal came at the 12:17 mark after Sara Kalhoff found the back of the net for the first time this season, giving the Eagles a 1-0 advantage. The lead was short lived, however, as the Vikings scored off a Kathryn Scislow goal just under four minutes after the Purple and Gold got on the scoreboard.
The Vikings held off 15 Northwestern second half shots until
Francie Piche (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) scored her second goal in two days, providing the visitors with their second lead of the game at the 79:04 mark.
Around five minutes after Piche's goal,
Lyssa Hester (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville) became the fifth Eagle to score in a game this year as she gave secured a two goal, 3-1 advantage for NWC.
Sarah Stenson (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) was credited for her first win of the season after tallying five saves in 90 minutes of play. The visitors on the scoreboard outshot the Vikings 27-7 and also posted an advantage in corner kicks, 8-0.
After starting conference play 2-0, Northwestern (2-2 overall)will now shift its focus to a 5 p.m. non-conference matchup at Hamline University next Tuesday, September 18, followed by a home UMAC contest against Northland College next Thursday, September 20.
